Other applications of foam concrete

The foam concrete use in the other traditional areas remains stable in its development. Roof and ground insulation construction, however, foam concrete insulation boards and decorative integrated boards, foam concrete composite wall panels and roof panels. Common foam concrete self-insulating blocks, expanded clay foam concrete and its products, polystyrene particle foam concrete and its products, foam concrete core-filled blocks, hollow mold casting foam concrete self-insulating composite walls, foam concrete fire door cores, foam concrete flue gas ducts, etc.

In addition to traditional applications, foam concrete also has great potential in the following new application areas:

(1) Reserved deformation layer for soft rock tunnel

The lining structure of deep soft rock tunnels is often damaged due to excessive creep deformation pressure of the surrounding rock. Setting a foam concrete reserved deformation layer can effectively absorb the creep deformation of the surrounding rock and relieve the lining pressure.

(2) Seismic isolation and thermal insulation layer of tunnels in cold regions

As my country's land transportation network continues to improve, a large number of tunnels will be built in high-altitude and extremely cold regions. The installation of a foam concrete seismic isolation and thermal insulation layer can not only isolate the seismic but also avoid damage to the main structure of the tunnel caused by frost damage.

(3) Port water conservancy projects

a. Backfill behind the revetment wall

In the heightening and reinforcement projects of revetment walls of water conservancy projects, foam concrete has recently become a popular choice for backfill materials behind the wall. It fully utilizes its characteristics of small bulk density, high strength, fast construction speed and simple construction, effectively reducing the load of backfill on the revetment wall behind the wall and minimizing the impact of the heightening and reinforcement treatment on the revetment wall.

b. Backfill behind gravity dock wall

The use of foam concrete as the backfill material behind the port gravity wharf wall can not only meet the anti-slip stability requirements of the top surface of the base bed, but also meet the anti-overturning stability requirements of the front toe of the retaining wall. At the same time, the base stress of foam concrete is smaller, and it has good applicability when used in soft foundations or large-volume backfill projects.

(4) Marine engineering

At present, the research on the application of foam concrete in marine engineering in my country is basically blank. Many years ago, foreign countries have used it as an impact-resistant layer for offshore drilling platforms. Due to its energy absorption properties, foam concrete can prevent objects such as drilling pipes and mud pumps from falling and causing damage to the main structure of the platform.

(5) Permeable foam concrete

Permeable foam concrete has an open, interconnected internal pore structure. It is prepared by using a foaming agent with specific properties. The higher porosity ensures that the material has a faster drainage speed and better water storage capacity. Permeable foam concrete has its special advantages in the construction of sponge cities. It can be made into permeable bricks and other products, or it can be cast in place to form a continuous permeable surface layer with good integrity. Its low density and adjustable characteristics are the main advantages compared to traditional crushed stone permeable concrete. When applied to the base with limited load bearing, it can play its advantages of light weight and load reduction. Foam concrete materials have good thermal insulation and sound absorption properties, so that permeable foam concrete can have multiple functions when applied. The existing permeable foam concrete green roof application technology utilizes the characteristics of the material with both permeability and thermal insulation functions, thereby simplifying the green roof system structure. However, there are still some key technical problems that need to be solved for this material, such as the urgent need to improve the anti-freeze and thaw and anti-shrinkage cracking performance, otherwise it will seriously limit its application in road paving projects.
